Marcie's Lyric Picks Vol. 1: Timely Voices

By Marcie of "Behind The Lyric"

The passage of time is something every conscious entity has no choice but to experience.  The experience of time is a subjective one, and highly dependent on our personal emotional state. When we are heartbroken, time can drag on endlessly.  It's the same when we are bored, or feeling purposeless.  When we are in love, smiling and laughing, or completely immersed in an activity we enjoy, then time feels like it is flying by.  I am sure many of us find listening to music makes time pass more pleasantly.

I have noticed that time is a topic often sung about in Vocal Trance, with artists sharing their own perspective on a moment of time in their life.  Here is a list of some of my favorite Vocal Trance tracks that mention moving forward in time, dreaming of the future, and being influenced by our memories.

1. Nic Chagall feat Jonathan Mendelsohn – This Moment listen

"And I can’t deny these memories got me all locked up inside
And you hold the key"

I think Jonathan expresses a sentiment we have all felt about our memories.  Memories can be bittersweet.  We need our memories to give our life context, but sometimes it's hard to break free of our memories to start fresh.

2. Armin van Buuren feat. Jaren - Unforgivable listen

"Well it ain’t over ’till it’s over
And my world shuts down
But this comes close, I’ll have you know
It’s just a matter of time"

When I hear this refrain, I hear the pain in Jaren's soul.  She is at a breaking point, but instead of breaking completely, she is finding a way to draw on her inner strength and keep moving forward.  I love lyrics about approaching the future with a new understanding of the past.

3. Air Hustlers feat. Colleen Riley - Downtime listen

"Shotgun-bang! And the race is on
I can't meet my deadlines, I can't read the headlines,
I stopped to smell the roses but their season had passed
I need a little down time"

It is sad to think about all the beauty we miss when we rush about our lives with tunnel vision.   In Behind The Lyric Episode 1, Colleen Riley says "Downtime....was a chance to write about that oft needed breath that we don't have time to take, or don't make time to take".

4. Mark Pledger Feat. Melinda Gareh - Time Stands Still listen

"Beyond this faded realm of reason
Time stands still"

Melinda sings about an experience when time seems to stop completely for her.  I think sometimes we all want the whirwind of our life to come to a halt so we can breathe, take a step back, and figure out what is going on, and what we truly want.

5. Cosmic Gate feat. Emma Hewitt - Not Enough Time listen

"I stand before you in the last dance of an old life…"

This line is chilling.  It reminds me that times are always changing, and it is our choice how we optimize our use of time.

6. Andy Duguid feat. Leah - Wasted listen

"Wasted all this time, searching
 Brought me to my knees"

The tone and melody that Leah uses to sing these words is full of heartache and regret over time wasted searching for something that cannot be found.

7. BT Feat. Jes – Every Other Way listen

"Heart don’t fail me now
‘Cause there is no time to waste"

Jes beautifully sings about her desire not to waste time in matters of the heart.

8. Oceanlab - Sky Falls Down
 listen

"You lose all sense of reason
You have no sense of danger
It's like you're living in a dream.
It lets you float through crowds and
Makes you smile at strangers
It's just the greatest state of being, Oohh... "

As I said earlier, when we're in love, time flies. Lovers fill time with daydreams, hopes, fantasies, and a sense of contentment.  These lyrics strike me as incredibly romantic, but also have a sense of desperation and intensity that perhaps cannot be maintained for long.  It makes me wonder how long does the euphoric state of love last?

9. Tydi & Dennis Sheperd feat. Marcie - Somehow listen

"If you could see into the future, would you do it different now?"

When I'm faced with very difficult decisions, I desperately wish I could see into the future for guidance.  Since we can't see into crystal balls, it is important not to ignore advice from people who have life experience that we can benefit from.

10. Tritonal feat. Hannah Sky – Jump Off listen

"So here we go again
Sometimes I feel nothing’s gonna change
Let’s jump off, into time"

I like the idea that sometimes we have to jump start our future, and now is as good a time as any to do that!

Mr. Sam Dives Deep Into The Essence of Dance Music

This is Simon Lee and Alvin from Radio KUL, a weekly podcast that you can listen on Mugasha. Here's an interview with one of the artistes that will be featured on this week's episode of Radio KUL.

Mr. Sam Dives Deep Into The Essence of Dance Music

It’s great to be finally speaking with the one and only, Samuel Joel Paquet, better known to the music world as Mr. Sam. Since 1995, this French artiste began DJing in major clubs around his home state. He produced several early records on Diki and MFS and began remixing for Delerium, Age of Love, and Sinead O’Connor. In 2002, he caught a big break when his track “Pressurize” was signed on Black Hole Recordings, catapulting him onto the mainstream arena. Since then he has produced more follow ups such as “Lyteo,” “Insight,” “Split,” and the Radio KUL favourite, “Cygnes.” Also, since 2007, he has developed his signature line of Opus compilations, which has so far seen 3 installments.

As he embarks on his new Israeli tour, Mr. Sam takes some time to speak to us about the history and fabric of dance music and his recent plans.

Mr Sam 1
Mr. Sam

Hi Sam. Thanks for doing this interview. What are you currently up to?
I just finished a new remix for BT’s new single called “Suddenly” and starting a new one for Rank 1 vs Jochen Miller “ The Great Escape” which has been chosen to be the anthem of EnTrance Party in Poland. I’m also finishing my new album Pop Model and getting my stuff packed for my tour in Israel as well.

Describe the Opus series to us, and tell us about your latest release and third in this series, Opus Tertio.
Opus Tertio was released in late October. I’m particularly proud of the success of this mix album. I’ve worked extremely hard on it to deliver a great piece of music. Musically speaking, Opus means work in Latin. It really stands for what I believe in work – grandeur and the length of time it took to put it together. The Opus series is extremely important in my eyes. I’ve done 3 so far and I’m very happy with the results so far.

You were one of the earliest to create the concept used in the Opus series.
I’m happy to see that this concept which I created completely independently several years ago has inspired many other famous DJs to do the same in the field of electronic music. Many of them have complimented me on this revolutionary and innovative concept using exclusively composed tracks. However, this approval was not won quickly. At that time, I had to convince people of the relevance of my artistic approach as well as the viability of the project itself. In my own time, I have been able to analyse the evolution of taste in music, thought deeply about it, and set my project in motion in a sustainable way.

You certainly took your time to finish Opus Tertio.
Of late, there’s an impression that getting your work known is more important than knowing how to. Communication has become essential, and this is undeniable. But this is not enough. We must be certain that behind all this is an artistic work of quality. Something that has been severely lacking in recent years. Although I take no personal glory from this, I’m flattered and happy to see that this basic and adventurous idea has now become the norm in the field of mix albums.

Why the theme “Man, Music, and God?”
According to some ancient myths, music has divine origins. So why did man invent this form of expression as well as language? Was it perhaps to express more universal spiritual sentiments and to speak to everybody? Is music the supreme universal language? I think so. In certain countries and religions, music has no other purpose than to reach and move the soul in order to elevate it to a spiritual, profound, and even ecstatic plane. Music is a vehicle which moves and elevates the soul, which should be in harmony with the mind. In other words, it should emit “universal vibrations”. Music is also our companion in every moment of life; some people see it as a friend or even a member of the family. That is how it is for me, I can’t live without it. Who has never cried or been moved by music or by a particular song?

Do you consider being a DJ a career or a passion pursued?
Being a DJ and music producer is not a profession or a career. It’s more like a vocation, a commitment that in the end is almost akin to a religious calling.

Do you feel that dance music has any substantial artistic quality?
Music does not have to be classical to posses this element of the divine. The works of certain modern composers also have this quality and we are in some way the new actors in this role. Contemporary or electronic music encourages the resurgence of a spiritual and personal type of expression as it is accessible and therefore addresses a larger public than ever before. Let’s not get lost in the new technology that helps to produce this music labelled “new generation” and let’s not be fooled by it either. The man behind the machine remains the essential element in the creation of music and not its slave. In this way machines become, not a hindrance, but an aid to the expression of human values and spirituality. Electro-acoustic music, like all contemporary work, is not only the main exponent of this approach, but is becoming an entity in its own right.

And what about dance music’s impact on the world?
Music, like the other arts, is at one and the same time a reflection of human evolution and a means of reaching the hearts of the general public. It can  “paint a picture” of society, of the “spirit of the times” portray emotions, philosophy or contemplation. It all depends on the listener’s interpretation.

Your perception of dance music has always been deeper than most.
It should be noted that it is not only classical or religious music that is spiritual, even if they do have a greater tendency to send music lovers on a voyage of self discovery. Music helps man to escape his humdrum existence and take refuge in the imaginary. Something which is not one of today’s luxuries. For me music remains as an invisible journey towards both spiritual and emotional escape. A passage between man and God himself. Religious vocabulary has a great presence in music, in the proper sense as well as figuratively: “God is a DJ”, “Temple of House Music”, The great music gatherings and festivals seem  to be mistaken for open air masses, with the faithful listening to the prophets, here embodied by the artists and the DJs! There is a real spirit of communion, of brotherhood. For some music is only a particular kind of noise, for me it is work of art when it succeeds in moving and creating a spiritual dialogue with its audience.

Do you believe dance music has more ability over other genres to preach unity?
Mozart said “Music can attempt anything, dare anything, portray anything, provided that it charms the listener and remains in the end still music.” I share this point of view and I would add that it has the power to unite peoples of all faiths. I have for many years been led to perform throughout the world to people from different cultures, origins and religions, and music has always had the almost miraculous power to unite rather than divide. Music has succeeded where politics has failed. It’s here that music fulfills its true potential as a universal and central language. It is easier to fight men than ideas. I wanted this new Opus Tertio to be largely spiritual. So I concentrated my efforts on that goal. Beauty and emotion were the essential qualities I was seeking for all of the titles of this new Opus chapter.

We see some of the most talented but undiscovered producers on Opus Tertio. How did you come in contact with them?
Making an album like Opus Tertio took me nothing less than a year because of the concept and hand picking all the artistes on my own. Nobody assisted me as I prefer to look and lose myself on the Internet looking for new talents, and also during my numerous gigs all over the world. It’s something I love. I received and listened to around 1000 tracks. I gave nearly each person a personal answer and finally selected around 25 tracks. All the tracks are exclusive and mostly not from established producers. However the quality is there in my opinion. I’ve always been there for helping new talents, wherever they are from. Sometimes unknown producers produce better records than some established ones. Everybody knows it. That’s the reason why I’m so happy that Opus is becoming the shop window for these hidden talents. They deserve more attention from the labels and clubbers. Some of the artistes that I pushed on Opus 1 and 2 are now being signed to many labels and doing massive releases and remixes (they know who they are!). I’m very happy for them. I simply gave them a push and they did the rest, so congratulations to them. Making a mix album as Opus 3 was not as simple as signing 24 tracks to a label and mixing them. It was a hell of a job believe me. There were many weeks where there were no good tracks. But in the end, it was a great joy to listen to the finished product.

Mr Sam 2

What differentiates your label, Appia Music, from other labels?
On Appia I do only release my own music, no other artistes. That’s the differentiation.

You were in Malaysia in August 2009 for Artistry The Global Art of Mixing. What was that experience like and are there any plans to come back?
I loved coming to Malaysia. I had a great time. One of my best to be honest. Everything was perfect or more than that. Thanks to my manager Richard Lee, his brother Hiro Lee and Luqman. The party was awesome and so was the productions. I was highly impressed. I’m now counting the days until I’m gonna come back to Malaysia ..I’ll be back very soon, for sure!

Also in 2009, you played for A State of Trance 400. How did it go?
Yes, what a great opportunity wasn’t it? I was very happy to take care to such a great event. I wont forget it. It was really cool to play with all my DJ friends, including Armin! The room was more than packed, and we all had a great time. It was good promotion for me as well. A few days after, I got lots of gig requests!

Is there any particular artiste or producer that you’d like to work with?
Too much to mention I think. I’m now focusing more on my own music and perhaps maybe later I’ll think about collaborations. Certainly looking for very good house singers at the moment. So send me your demos!

You seem to be extremely hardworking and you must have a hectic schedule. What do you when you’re not making music?
I love history, especially Romans, Egyptians, and Greek antiques. I also love paintings, scultures, and art in general. Somehow, all my life revolves around art. I live for art!

Who do you feel have been vital to your successful career?
Arny Bink from Black Hole who has always supported me.

What has been the record of 2009 for you?
It’s hard to say because I’ve heard so many good tracks. My favorite one this year for sure is Dash Berlin’s “Man On The Run.”

What are your current and upcoming plans like?
I have a new solo album called Pop Model coming out, and I’ll be touring a lot this year. There maybe a new Opus 4 and I’m working on a new exciting project.

And lastly, any message to your fans reading this!
Malaysia I’ll be back soon and I hope to show you some love. Please follow me on Twitter!

    Susana Takes Centerstage

This is Simon Lee and Alvin from Radio KUL, a weekly podcast that you can listen on Mugasha. Here's an interview with one of the artistes that will be featured on this week's episode of Radio KUL.

    Susana Takes Centerstage

As we continue to kickoff 2010 in style here on Radio KUL, we’ll be bringing you closer to yet another international singing sensation this week.

Susana Lise, better known as Susana, is the voice behind some of our favourite records. By chance, she was featured on Ernesto vs Bastian’s “Dark Side of The Moon” in 2005. Little did she realise that it would mark the beginning of a very successful career in dance music. Originally from an alternative rock background, she brings edginess and powerful vocals to all of her tracks.

Susana has been very fortunate. Almost all of her tracks have gone on to be massive singles. “Shivers” (2005) and “If You Should Go” (2008) were international smash hits and remain as festival favourites, and last year she scored pure gold again on Rex Mundi’s “Nothing At All,” which was a DJ favourite and deservingly one of 2009’s top tunes. In between all that, she’s worked with Talla 2XLC, Ernesto vs Bastian, and Re:Locate too. She’s also gone on tour with A-list DJs to perform her tracks. Her talent and gift will continue to shine this year as she reveals her brand new album.

Here she is speaking with us for this exclusive Radio KUL Extra interview.

    Susana 09 High Res
    Susana

Hi Susana, thanks for speaking with us today. How are you?
I am doing fine, thank you. Thanks for having me!

It’s been a spectacular 2009 for you. Your track with Boy Hagemann aka Rex Mundi “Nothing At All” was not only a DJ favorite, it was also one of the top tracks of the year in terms of popularity and sales. Only you can tell us what this feels like.
It’s a great feeling of course. Ever since the first time I heard the instrumental I felt a strong personal connection to the track. So, to know that so many people have been touched by “Nothing at All” in the same way feels great. It’s a great feeling to know that something you have put a lot of emotion into is so much appreciated by others.

You’ve already made many wonderful records with Ernesto vs Bastian, Armin van Buuren, Talla 2XLC and many more. What got you involved with dance music?
I have basically been singing my whole life. I remember how, as a little girl, I would sing along to my dads records, teaching myself how to use my voice by mimicking the singers. When I was 15 I started to take professional vocal lessons to learn more about my voice and it’s capabilities. Around that same time I was participating in shows at my high school on a regular basis and I joined a band, further developing my skills and love for music. The music we made with the band was rock/alternative based with some funky flavors added here and there, and my vocal lessons focused mostly on classical music and jazz.

So you could say I was creating a pretty diverse musical background. However, I never really explored electronic dance music. This changed when a neighbor of my family, after having seen me perform with my band, decided to introduce me to producers Raz Nitzan and Adrian Broekhuyse in 2003, when I was 19 years old. Just a couple of months later we went into the studio and recorded the vocals for Ernesto vs Bastian’s “Dark Side of the Moon” which was released in 2005… So that is basically how I entered the world of EDM,.. and I don’t plan to go anywhere anytime soon!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw most of my inspiration from music itself and from my own emotions and experiences. Within trance music my preference goes out to the more progressive tracks with a deep beat, multiple layers and a little mystery to them. Besides listening to trance and progressive tracks I love listening to singer/songwriters, especially the female ones, like Fiona Apple, Tori Amos and Imogen Heap, to get inspired by their lyrics and to learn from the way they communicate emotion with their voice. Because I believe that is what being a vocalist is all about: conveying certain emotions with your voice. And I believe these emotions need to be sincere in order to really touch people. So that is why, when for example I am recording vocals in the studio, I search for inspiration in my own emotions and current and past experiences.

What else are you currently working on?
It has been 5 years since my first official release and I am celebrating this with the release of a complete album later this year on Armada Music! So I have spent a lot of time in the studio lately working on new material in collaboration with different DJ’s and producers. We have just recently decided on the album title, which is going to be ‘Closer’. Most tracks are finished so we are now in the process of preparing the release, which is scheduled for this spring. And since I am expecting to be doing a lot of live shows this year I am also taking extra vocal lessons and will be participating in a two day vocal workshop in order to keep my voice healthy.

Who are your current favorite artistes? Is there anybody you would like to collaborate with in particular?
Well, I have already been very fortunate to work with a lot of different great DJs and producers for my upcoming album – whose names will be revealed in time ;) – but amongst some of my current favorite EDM artists are definitely Armin van Buuren, Rex Mundi, Markus Schulz, Arnej, Dash Berlin, Nic Chagall/Cosmic Gate and Deadmau5. As for my fellow vocalists I really like the sound of Aruna, – especially in Cosmic Gate’s “Under Your Spell” – and Jes, Nadia Ali, Jaren, Jennifer Rene and Departure, the male vocalist of Markus Schulz’ tracks “Without You Near” and “Cause You Know,” which, by the way are two of my favorite tracks because of their edginess. Speaking of which, I’d like to see more male vocalists in trance music! But I’ve heard Markus Schulz’s artist album will feature a new male vocalist. So I can’t wait to here that!

Somehow, all of the tracks you’ve recorded have gone on to be major releases. Do you attribute this to luck or are there particular projects that you’re drawn to?
Of course it is important to have talent, to put your mind to it and to work hard. But, in order to become successful I think a little luck is necessary as well. I have been very fortunate to get in touch with Raz Nitzan and Adrian Broekhuyse, who are not only great producers but also have an amazing track record and have a lot of the right contacts. And to be honest, over the years we have also recorded many tracks and vocals that did not get released. However, we never get rid of anything, because you never know when the right moment to release a certain track will arrive. My album for example will contain a track that we’ve recorded I think at least two years ago.

How do you think you’ve changed, as a person, and professionally, between the time of your first release to today?
Wow, that’s an interesting question. Let me think. Well, first of all, on a personal level the biggest change must be that, about 1,5 ago, I finally decided to focus completely on music. Music has always been a passion, but besides becoming a professional singer one of my dreams had always been to live in another country for a while, experience new cultures, meet new people, go backpacking… In other words: I longed to stand on my own two feet and experience some adventures. So, after finishing high school, when I was 18, I traveled to Peru in South America and stayed there for 5 months. I went to school there to learn Spanish, worked with disabled children and went backpacking. I know this might sound cliché but it was a live changing experience. I fell in love with South America, with its language, its culture and with the feeling of traveling independently and meeting new people. So, when I returned to Holland I decided I wanted to study Latin American Studies at university. I loved it and of course it took up a lot of my time.

Meanwhile I kept on planning new travels, thinking of ways even to find a job abroad. Then slowly I became involved with trance music and started to fall for that too. So, you could say that at one point my heart was torn between two passions. But I think eventually you need to decide what it really is that you want in life. What really is your place. And I found that music is where I want to be. And so I decided it was time to give it a chance. I mean, it is not easy to make a career out of singing. But I decided that if I didn’t at least try, I would come to regret it later in life. So after I graduated my bachelors degree in Latin American Studies I decided not to go on to get a Masters degree. And I have not regretted this decision, not even one second. Because since I started to really put my mind to it things started developing very fast.

And now I am even releasing a complete album! Sometimes I really need to pinch myself. On a professional level I think the biggest change is that I am much more aware now of who I am as an artist. I really found my spot in electronic dance music and have a clear idea of where my preferences lie within the genre. I believe it has so much to offer and the music itself is developing very fast, I feel like the different subgenres of dance music are starting to fuse more and more with each other and I think this fusion is a very interesting development. I am also under the impression that using authentic instruments and live artists is becoming more and more mainstream in dance music. Which I think is great.

So, it’s obvious EDM has not yet reached its limits, not by far, and I cant wait to explore it further.

    Armin Only 2006

What are your other interests besides music? What do you do when you’re not making music?
As I’ve explained I studied Latin American Studies for a couple of years and I combined this with a minor in International Development Studies and a minor in European Union Studies. And even though I didn’t continue my studies my interests still lie there. I met some of my closest friends at university so I share that interest with them. Which is nice. And currently, besides working on my career, I have a part-time job as a supervisor of market research at Amsterdam Airport, which I enjoy very much. When I’m not working at the airport or working on music I like to hang out with my friends, watch a movie, cook dinner. The usual stuff. But, I must say, I also often find myself daydreaming to music. And I can do this for hours. I am the type of person that, when I like a song, can play it fifty times in a row without getting bored by it. Oh and I love working out in the gym accompanied by the trance and progressive sounds on my mp3 player. It always gives me a great rush. You should try it! Preferably on the crosstrainer haha…

In your opinion, how can EDM artists make a difference to the world?
Even though I am pessimistic about a person being able to change the world completely, I do think that, on a smaller scale, anyone can make a difference. Of course a public or famous person can use it’s status to inspire people to take action, or to donate, as we see is happening a lot now with the earthquake that has struck Haiti. But first and foremost I think EDM artists, or any artist for that matter, can make a difference through reaching people with their music. I receive a lot of messages of people telling me how a certain song helped them through a difficult time in their lives. I think this is the strength of music and it’s amazing. I remember Armin wearing a t-shirt once that said: “Make music, not war!” and I think that is a very true statement!

Will you perhaps be touring again soon? When and where can we watch you live next?
At the moment I have no live shows scheduled because we want to wait until after the album is released. But I can’t wait to go on the road again because performing is the greatest feeling in the world and I am impatient to share my new tracks with the crowd! I am really looking forward to the summer. To the festival season. I will post any updates about upcoming tour dates on my Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

How does it feel to be guesthosting this week’s Radio KUL? :)
Yes, thanks for having me! It’s a great opportunity and a fun challenge. I have never done anything like this before. I have done some short voiceovers for radio in the past but I never guesthosted an entire show. It’s a nice way of speaking about my work and plans. I do hope I come across naturally though! And for lack of a studio nearby I recorded the show in my room. But every once in a while a car would pass by and I would have to rerecord my take haha. But I had fun! And I hope your listeners will enjoy the show as well.

How do you expect 2010 to turn out?
I am feeling very excited to get to work a lot this year! And I am curious to see how the album will be received. It is going to be an important year for my career. That’s for sure. And I hope to be able to combine my two passions – music and travelling – a lot this year by going on the road to perform live!

And lastly, any message to your fans reading this.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that is always sending me such nice comments through Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. That really means a lot to me. It’s great to know that there are people out there that share the same passion for music! And also thanks to those who give me chills down my spine each time I perform by singing along with every word of the song :) I hope to see you somewhere in a club again soon!

Sean Tyas To Perform at Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation

This is Simon Lee and Alvin from Radio KUL, a weekly podcast that you can listen on Mugasha. Here's an interview with one of the artistes that will be featured on this week's episode of Radio KUL.

Sean Tyas To Perform at Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation

The Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday. The follow up to the first Music Conference Asia held last year, this event aims to provide participants with industry sound advice on music composing, production, and marketing. The conference during the day will be followed by a massive appreciation party at night.

One of the artistes making an appearance at this event is Sean Tyas. Since 2006, he has constantly produced records such as “Lift.” “Something’s Up,” “For The Most Part,” “I Remember Now” and “Melbourne” that have effortlessly found its way into the front of DJ boxes. Ranked #54 on the DJ Mag Top 100 of 2009, he has remixed for, among many, PUSH, Alex MORPH, and most recently, he provided “the Tyas treatment” to “Waiting” by Dash Berlin. Tyas has been shortlisted to perform at this year’s A State of Trance 450 celebrations in April. He’s even remixed Breaking Benjamin’s “Diary of Jane” and more recently, a cheeky bootleg of Guns N Roses’ “Sweet Child” that you might hear on his sets. With many more original productions, festival appearances, and new remixes (including his brand new remix of John O’Callaghan Feat Audrey Gallagher’s “Take It All Away”) anticipated for 2010, his presence is eagerly expected at The Creation.

We manage to get a few minutes with Sean Tyas for this Radio KUL Extra interview.

    Sean Tyas
    Sean Tyas

Greetings Sean, it’s good to have you on this interview. How are you?
Great, just re-wired and re-organized my whole studio.. sort of a New Year’s new start.

We absolutely love “Melbourne,” “I Remember Now,” and “Tingle.” Can we expect any new productions from you in the near future?
Absolutely, I have several tracks underway, but right now I am concentrating on finishing off a couple of remixes, then I can focus more on all original material, mostly because I am shooting to have an album finished this year.

Your remix for Dash Berlin’s “Waiting” and Paul Webster’s “Time” have also been very well received. Can you clue us in on any upcoming remixes?
At the moment I am working on an official remix of the classic 4 Strings “Daytime.” This was one of the early 4 Strings big hits in the trance scene.

What has been your favourite Sean Tyas work to date?
To date, possibly “Heart to Heart” or “I Remember Now.”

Is there a club or festival that you’re particularly fond of, and why?
Basically anywhere I play in Argentina. It’s always an absolute treat to go there, because the people on the dancefloors there just go completely crazy. They live and breathe music there, and you really can feel a different sort of energy.

Was there ever a point of time in your career so far that you felt really dismayed? Tell us about this.
Well, this is a career that is FULL of points of feeling dismay. If we didn’t ever feel that, we would never be PROUD of anything. I suppose early on, if a remix I had worked a lot on was not accepted or told change things, then I definitely felt dismayed. But, this is part of the job, and now my skin is a lot thicker.

In your opinion, who is the current “DJ’s DJ?” Is there any particular DJ or producer that inspires you and why?
For me, my DJ’s DJ is John Askew … Number one, he is the most honest person I have ever met. Number two, he can play twice the amount of trance tracks in one set that anyone else can, and it still sounds amazing.

    Sean Tyas

What can we expect from Sean Tyas in 2010?
This year I launch my label Tytanium Recordings, and I am actually taking demos so feel free to send them to my email address. I am promising myself that I do a full album this year. I also want to further develop m show, Tytanium Sessions, to a new level of polish.

What’s currently playing on your iPod?
I use it for games only! I’m a big gamer.

Are you looking forward to the Music Conference Asia Factory “The Creation” in January? What can we expect to learn at the workshop?
I will cover several topics related to sequencing in Logic. But the tips I share there can be applied to any sequencer really. Hopefully (participants) can walk away having learned something new.

How do you think the new Pioneer line of DJ gear will change DJing?
It looks amazing, but I think it will be at least a year or two before we start to see the CDJ2000s as standard in the clubs,if ever. Remember when Vestax made a better turntable than the Technics 1200? Clubs still stuck with their Technics.

What do you do when you’re not making music or touring?
Spending time with my newly expanded family. Just had a little baby girl who is now 4 months old.

And lastly any message to your fans reading this!
Really looking forward to getting to play in KL! It will be my first time there ever so I am just thrilled to see what is in store there! And I really hope you all enjoy the set I will play.

Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation takes place on Saturday 23rd January 2010 at KL Live @ Life Centre, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. For more info, go to visitmcasia.com.

Richard Durand To Perform at Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation

This is Simon Lee and Alvin from Radio KUL, a weekly podcast that you can listen on Mugasha. Here's an interview with one of the artistes that will be featured on this week's episode of Radio KUL.

Richard Durand To Perform at Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation

This weekend, the Music Conference Asia Music Factory – The Creation takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The follow up to the first Music Conference Asia in November 2008, this event will once again provide attendees with insights on music production and promotions, followed by an appreciation party that’s set to be a treat for party goers too.

Speaking at this event is Richard Durand. Currently ranked #49 in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll of 2009, Durand has worked magic for Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Fragma, Snow Patrol and Prodigy. As a touring DJ, he has performed at Sensation, Trance Energy, Godskitchen, and The Gallery. His 2009 release, Always The Sun has already unleashed 3 groundbreaking singles and will continue to see more exposure in 2010. The new single, “Xelerate” has just been released on Magik Muzik.

Just before he makes an appearance this weekend, Richard Durand takes a few minutes to speak to Radio KUL Extra.

    Richard Durand

Hello Richard. Thanks for doing the interview. Where are you currently at?
At the moment I’m on a rare holiday – and I’m at a secret island location in Malaysia! I try to get every year at least one or two weeks to fly off for some rest.

2009 has been overwhelming year from you. Congratulations on being in the Top 50 of the DJ Mag poll. What were some of the highlights of 2009 for you?
I had some great highlights, some of which were the massive Sensation white parties in Australia and Poland, my summer residency at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza and the release of my first artist album ‘Always The Sun’.

Touring a lot must be very hectic. How do you still find the time to make music?
I work in the studio during most weekdays, and I also produce from my Mac book in hotels and during flights while on tour.

What’s your current favourite record and producer? Is there any DJ, producer, or artiste that you’d be interested to work with?
At the moment my favorite producer is Andy Duguid – I like a lot of his tracks right now.

How would you describe your sound in 3 words?
    Melodic, Energetic, Makes-you-dance!

You’ve played many cities and festivals over the last few years. Which has been the most memorable for you and why?
Ibiza is still the best place to be for me. The island holds a special magic, partly due to the location and partly from the special party people that bring the place alive at night.

    Richard Durand 2

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen on the road so far?
There was one festival which had so much rain people where completely black with mud from top to toe from falling down, but they were actually enjoying themselves more than any ‘dry’ party crowd and danced right the way through the rain!

We love your remix of Art of Trance. Are there any plans to remix another classic?
Yes there are plans in place, but unfortunately they’re top, top secret at the moment. Keep an eye on my website for more news in the weeks ahead! What I can tell you is that I’ve just finished a remix for the Crystal Method.

Tell us about your next production or remix. Any clues?
Sure, the next single release will be “Xelerate” and will be released on 18 January.

In your opinion, what sounds do you think will dominate dance records in 2010? Are there any elements or styles that we will see emerge?
Each year seems to bring a fusion of styles in dance music from mainstream producers. Maybe tribal beats will make a return after the recent rebirth of electro and minimal? Who knows… but one thing I do know is that I’ll be making my own sounds and not following others in 2010, haha!

How do you think the new Pioneer line of DJ gear will change DJing?
It could bring some interesting changes for some, but at present I’m happy with 3xCDJ1000s and my CD case.

Are you looking forward to the Music Conference Asia Factory “The Creation” in January? What can we expect to learn at the workshop?
I’m really looking forward to it and for me it’s new to be a part of a workshop discussion, so I’ll try to share some of my experience with up and coming producers in the region.

And lastly any message to your fans reading this!
Many thanks for reading this and I hope to see many of you at the event!
