The Russian dance music duo Pavel Khvaleyev and Vitaly Khvaleyev, better known as Moonbeam, have been creating top notch quality original productions and remixes since 2004. On their list of accolades, our favourites here at Radio KUL include “All For A Dance” and their recent remix of Tritonal’s “Crash Into Reason.” They tend to explore the wonderful spectrum of trance that is chilled and patient. Which is why we are absolutely looking forward to Moonbeam on this week’s Radio KUL guestmix. As always, no guestmix on the show is complete without a Radio KUL Extra interview with us.

We have to ask, briefly, how was Moonbeam formed?
In 2003 we have started to work with Chris Lunsford from California, (the composer) and the vocalist in a number of compositions, including our debut vinyl, Raven Gipsy EP. He (thought up) the name for our project.

Moonbeam has crafted many wonderful productions and remixes to date. Which are your favourites and why?
Yes, especially lately we have made many original works and remixes. From (our more recent works), we (love) “About You” (featuring Avis Vox) and our latest remix for Whelan Di Scala vs Oliver Lang’s “Virgil” – we (liked) the initial track very much and we tried (to bring a different twist with our sound).

Where can we catch you guys live next?
On (12th) September at (Cream St Petersburg) (together with DJs such as John Digweed).

We love the track “Fantasize.” How did you guys meet Esmaye?
We don’t (personally know) Esmaye,our cooperation was via Tyler Michaud.

Tell us more about the inspiration to create “All For A Dance.”
(We) like to create a melody which then would become a basis (for a video clip). In the (video clip), we tried to transfer the atmosphere of (modern life).

You have a new radio show called Moon Magic. How can we listen to this show?
Moon Magic is a new exclusive radio show on DI.FM (Digitally Imported Radio) every 4th Monday of the month (at 3 pm US EST). We present (an) exclusive progressive / trance mix with all the latest tunes from Moonbeam’s box.

Are you guys currently working on any new productions or remixes?
We (just) recored a new vocal track with Avis Vox. The title and release date (is still) a secret ;)

In your opinion, what was the best ever Moonbeam gig so far and why?
Our favorite gig was in Japan in club Ageha. (It was a wonderful atmosphere)!

What is Moonbeam Digital?
This is our main label, which include 2 sub-labels called Diosma Records (tech house and techno) and Moon Tribal Records (progressive). On Moonbeam Digital, we release mainly vocal tracks. Our main artists (are) Blackfeel White and J-Soul.

We’d like to introduce to you one of 2009’s most promising discovery, Tom Geiger. This singer songwriter has been crafting music since 2000, working with names such as Markus Moser (IIO), John Creamer and Stephane K, Morgan Paige and Lance Jordan.

We have plenty of respect for Tom, a former DJ and now an international sensation. His much anticipated album, Vicious Times, is made up of gems, each uniquely crafted to bring you on a journey of exploration and realization. There is no doubt that Tom has invested his raw emotions and true life stories into the making of this album, no holds barred. Tom attempts to condense his very existence and soul into the songs you’ll hear on this release.

Skeptical at first, we were sent some of Tom’s music for us to sample. We were warned that it wasn’t our usual diet of trance music, but something we should try with an open mind. We procrastinated for many days, but on a very unsuspecting evening, we gave it a generous listen and was completely taken aback positively. We knew we had a winner and we knew Tom had to be on the show. This is something we had to share with all our listeners and fans of quality sincere contemporary music.

So, this weekend on Radio KUL, we’ve invited Tom Geiger will join us for a 30 minute special to talk about some of his tracks from the album. It’s a massive treat for both fans of Tom, and would be ones too. If you haven’t heard his music, we’re certain you’ll be mesmerized and pleasantly surprised when you tune in to one of Radio KUL’s most innovative episodes. Tom will peel off the layers and give you an intimate account of some of our favourite tracks from his album.

We only wished we met more people like Tom Geiger every now and then. A genuine gem with a lot of truth to be told.

How long have you been doing this?
My whole life, really. I started out making songs as a child, then took up guitar and piano. I have been writing, performing and producing music professionally since my university days.

How did you get into showbiz?
My first band was The Droogs. Then I worked as a DJ, where I learned the key to showbiz – make the mood and get people to connect with it. While writing and performing in New York I signed a production and development deal with Markus Moser and started recording. Markus had the good fortune of working with Nadia Ali. The iio project took off, and Markus asked me to be tour manager for iio. The experience gave me good insights into the business end of art.

How did you get Morgan Page to remix “Empty Girl!”?
Craig Mitchell was working with John Creamer on the NYLOVE release and promotional of “Can One Day” and turned Morgan on to my work. They knew each other from the Vermont House scene. I sent the question to Morgan to get his take: “I heard the vocals and instantly thought I could do a cool club mix, with a bit of an indie edge. I’ve been hammering this mix at every club for the past six months.” – Morgan Page 9/6/09

Is “Empty Girl” the first Tom Geiger track or have there been other releases before this?
I’ve got a number of releases out there, most of which are available through iTunes. The Creamer/K/Jordan Remix of “Can One Day Change Your Life” was released officially on NYLOVE Records. Also, I released “Vicious Times” initially as a three-song EP and then as an eight-song album as I subsequently built up compatible material.

Tell us about the album, “Vicious Times”. It’s sounding very current; we think it’s a very interesting CD.
Thank you very much. I dug deep within my psyche in developing the album. I also got some great help from Lance Jordan, whose insights and creativity helped me create a polished, accessible musical journey. When we started recording the title track, “Vicious Times,” Lance rented a studio above a Buddhist School in Chinatown. I always felt there was a divine force in the mix. Looking back, I see even more clearly that karma was at work because after we finished “Some Days Are Better Than Others,” Lance closed his studio and I helped him move out. It was a symbolic close to our creative journey together.

Something about that track “Some Days” is so simple but has so much potential. What was in your mind writing this track?
I debuted it live in September 2007 and everyone in the audience totally connected with it. They were moved, and we shared that moment. My band really loved that song and we would often close the set with it. But I really had to convince Lance Jordan to produce it because it was so simple musically and the suicide reference in the last verse was kind of heavy. I was trying to cope after a nasty breakup when I wrote the song. You probably know the feeling – lying flat on your back looking up at an endless hole after the rug gets pulled out from under you. I was lonely, angry, scared, righteous and pugnacious. I kept wondering if I would ever feel better. “Some Days” got me back on track to positive evolution, away from that bad human habit of turning the past over and over again.

How about “Thank God We Got Good Friends?” A reminder of the obvious that we tend to overlook. Tell us about this track, and any chance you’d do an acoustic version of this (because we think it would sound great!).
“Thank God” was the second track Lance and I finished. An ex girlfriend’s father had passed away, and I went to support her during the funeral. I was touched and overwhelmed by beauty of the ceremony. I wrote the first two verses and the chorus shortly afterwards. Lance Jordan and Bill Finizio, a longtime live collaborator, helped add to my concept. This has been a crowd favorite at live performances and appeared in the ABC television show “Eli Stone.”

Describe Tom Geiger in 3 words.
Persistent, Lucky and Funny.

What’s your favourite track on the album and why?
“Can One Day Change Your Life”. Because it was very much a team effort (Creamer, stephane K and Lance Jordan). Even though I intended it to be very melancholy song it continues to surprise me and has become a symbol of healing, kindness and positive change. Life can be like that – things grow and change, opposites are actually all part of a greater whole.

Could you tell us about an artiste or a person in your life that inspires you?
I admire anyone telling the truth these days. RIP George Carlin.

What are your current and upcoming plans looking like?
Continued work on the promotion of the “Empty Girl” remix, the completion of the music for my live appearance, and the recording of the new songs I’ve written.

What’s on your iPod these days?
Lights & Music, The Big Pink, Plastic Operator, Mgmt, and Dangermouse’s The Grey Album.

Allow us to dig a little deeper. Is there a special person in your life? What is she like, or if there isn’t any, what do you look for in a partner?
I love all women. I’m intrigued by their mystery and I appreciate their sensitivity and unique strength.

Did you crash Nadia Ali’s birthday? We saw the photos Tom.
I didn’t crash that party but I can tell you it was a real smash and bash and fights did break out. Nadia is a dear friend and huge supporter asked me to sing “Thank God” and “Empty Girl” for her birthday present.

Dance culture has seeped into so many forms of music. What do you make of the current state of electronic music?
People like dance music and other genres are finding are incorporating the house groove to reach out to as many people as possible.

What do you hope to achieve for the remainder of 2009?
In the process of making videos for the songs and working on my live show set for fall and winter shows. I’d love to win a Grammy and do a world tour. Lofty goals.

Corderoy was formed in the early 2000s consisting of brothers Dale and Chris. With several outstanding releases on Mondo, Maelstrom, and Deepblue, Corderoy (now with only Dale on board) returns this year with the smash hit “Kyrie.” It has earned acclaims from DJs around the world, and it was the Radio KUL Anthem of episode 103. We catch up with Dale Corderoy to find out about what he has planned for the near future for this Radio KUL Extra interview.

Hi Dale, how are things coming along with Corderoy?
Hi Guys, things are going very well but really busy at the moment trying to get everything done. I’ve got a list as long as the eye can see to get done over the next few weeks!

Love the new track, “Kyrie.” Great comeback. Tell us more about this track.
I wanted to return to what I love doing the most, writing uplifting music. I spent the last few years trying different things to help develop my sound and I had to experiment to do that. Not everything worked but it was a great learning process for me and really helped to define my sound a bit more. Kyrie is just the start of a lot of new material I’ll be releasing soon, in my mind I think some of the material I have yet to come out is going to blow everything else I’ve done out of the water.

Many years ago Corderoy started with you and your brother. Where is he these days?
He’s living the dream as professional pornstar! No if I’m serious we plan to work together in the future but due to distance and his other commitments we decided to put the duo on hold a few years back. Stay tuned though as there’ll be more from us together in the future.

What are you up to when you’re not making music?
Play a bit of sport to keep fit and like to get out when I can to socialise with friends, have a game console but rarely play due to not having enough time. To be honest I spend most of my time in front of a computer or writing music so when I get a spare moment free I prefer to get out and about.

We ask this at all our interviews, which of your tracks or remixes means the most to you and why?
I have a soft spot for a tune that’s not been properly release yet called “At Night” that I wrote during a time when I lost a couple of family members so I think quite a bit of emotion went it to that one, sounds odd but I never tire of listening to it. Outside of trance it would be “Born Again”, it’s an old ambient track I wrote about 3 years ago. I have so many people write to me about that song and how its touched them, I’ve been told people have played it at funerals, weddings and births as it means so much to them. I’m always lost for words what to write back as it takes you back a bit when you read something like that, makes it all worthwhile.

What differentiates Corderoy with your alias, DFunkt?
Tracks that go under the DFunkt alias are a little more down tempo and might be a bit more experimental. I’m not a massive fan of having loads of aliases but I felt I needed to decipher a little between some of the styles, I have a alias for house music too, DCord.

What gear do you use in your studio?
I run Cubase sx 4 on a pc, for near field monitoring Yamaha NS-10s, hardware wise I have a JP-8080 and a Virus C. On the software side of things couple of the best ones I think would be D:Cam and Guru by fxpasion, Jupiter-8 and Analog Factory by Arturia.

What do you think is essential to any live DJ set?
Working it to the crowd your playing to, there’s no point have a predetermined set and then loosing the crowd when you can change. Unfortunately I’ve seen way too many DJs do this, at the end of the day the crowd is why your there and you are entertaining them with the hope of giving them the best night possible, you’re not there to play for yourself you’re there for them its a group effort:)

We’re now in September, so far which track do you think should be crowned Track of The Year of 2009?
Kyrie? … worth a go I suppose ;) There’s been absolutely loads of great songs this year it would be really hard to pick one to be honest. Ask me in December and I�’ll make a call on it.

What are your current and upcoming plans?
I’m in the phase of writing material for two new albums that are due to come out later this year. That’s aside from other works and collaborations with the likes of Judge Jules, Mike Koglin and Sunny Lax, Richie Kayven (one half of what used to be Dogzilla).

What’s currently on your iPod?
My iPod is a bit of a mess has so many unfinished works by me on there, mixed in with loads of other music from all genres. Things like Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros through to classical stuff from composers like John Williams and Ludovico Einaudi, all mixed in with contemporary dance music…varied is the word of the day thats for sure.

What’s this we hear about a debut album? Who will be featured on this album and when can we expect a release?
I can’t give too much away at the moment as a lot has yet to finalised, but yes that’s right. Well actually truth be told I’m planning on doing two believe it or not! One will focus on the club music featuring unreleased material and some of my more well known pieces, the other will be ambient / breakbeat with a classical edge throughout. The due date will be towards the end of the year.

What’s the tour schedule looking like?
Only hand picking a few gigs at this point and time as I’m pretty tied up with producing at the moment, I love playing out though so will be more towards the end of the year once I’ve got some of these key projects out of the way.

Could you tell us your top 3 fave DJs or producers in the scene at this moment.
For newcomers I really like are Breakfast and Avenger, this year I’ve loved pretty much everything by Cosmic Gate.

Who do you think will ace this year’s DJmag Top 100?
Tiesto or PVD.

Dutch superstar Woody van Eyden is a celebrity in the dance music world! If there was a Trance Walk of Fame, Woody would have his own star on it by now! Known for being quirky and just going mad on stage, he fathered early trance sounds in the 80s and continues to pioneer the scene through countless releases and remixes on labels such as Fenology, Alter Ego, and Kontor, among many other compilations too.

You’ve seen him live, you’ve seen the videos, you’ve heard his music, and we all love his radio show, Heavensgate. Thanks to a time he calls “babypause,” we get our 5 minutes with the legendary Woody van Eyden!

Woody, we are extremely glad to be speaking with you for Radio KUL Extra. Trance wouldn’t be the same without you. How are you these days and what have you been up to?
You are right, what would the world be without me..hahaha, less rock and roll I guess. At this very moment I am enjoying a time of no DJing as my wife is expecting our first baby (soon). (Not travelling for the first time since) so many years gives me time to be more creative in the studio, that’s great.

How’s the response coming along for the remixes for “B.O.B.?”
Well I firstly made the track last year for my gig at Germaniys highest profile “Mayday”, then the reactions were great so we finished it and the new single “B.O.B.” was born. I asked my studio partner (in this case CRX) if he wanted to add a remix and he did a great remix. Then Spinnin Records from Holland asked me if i could imagine (releasing) this track on their label, (which sounded) very exciting, so we did it. Then they had an awesome remix made by one of their new names, Ummet Ozcan. (After which) “B.O.B.” was completed ready (and got) released.

What are current favourite tracks?
“Gosh… they change by the hour. I love Dash Berlin’s remix of Medina´s “You & I,” (as well as Alex) M.O.R.P.H.’s remix of Loverush UK.”

You’ve been to Malaysia last year for Knight Castle 09, and we hear you’ll be back again soon! When can we expect you?
I hear there are negotiations either for the end or this year or early 2010, (so yeap) I am coming back!

You bring so much energy to a live show. How do you stay up and running like this all the time!
It’s so funny, if i see videos of myself i think…ooohhh, aaahhhh and other things. The truth is I am so much a clubber myself and (clubbers) shouldn’t stand still, (so) neither can I. I expect my crowd to get my energy (so) that they can give back (that energy) to me (too). (It’s) a full exchange of energy.

Which track do you think got you into trance, if you had to choose one?
I really loved “Waterfall” by Atlantic Ocean and it wasn’t even called trance those days. When I signed Airwave from Rank 1 for my label Clubbgroove back in the years, nobody believed this thing called trance would go so big. (But) I just loved the track so i signed it.

Tell us about your radio show, Heavensgate. It’s turned into a series of parties too, that’s really wicked. Any more Heavensgate live shows on the horizon?
Oh yeah, and it’s only just starting. We have a global network of 35 stations in over 30 countries and we are growing weekly. The (events) side of HeavensGate (are sometimes) events that we host ourselves. (For example), we rented a Toyota Car Center in June this year, (took) out all the cars, (furnitures, and etc.) and we did the full organsation, line up, sound, bars, etc. (It) was a sell out ..people loved it! Sometimes we (go) live from clubs like we did from Cream Ibiza again this year, as well as Judgement Sundays. (We’ve even had) 2 years in a row (live from our) HeavensGate Loveparade truck!

Are you currently working on any new music?
Inspirations are huge at the moment . I just finished 2 remixes, started to work on a follow up for B.O.B. and I am doing different demos at the same time for my artist album (due to get out in mid 2010).

Who’s your favourite newcomer to the trance scene for this year?
Defo: Ummet Ozcan

What’s your tour calendar looking like for the rest of the year?
Babypause till end of September then back on the road. Germany, Russia, Holland, England, Scotland, Switzerland, etc.

Who do you think of when you’re having a bad day?
I don’t think about one person in (particular) but (the way I see it), the world and it’s (citizens have) a lot of problems and I see myself as being very fortunate that I can travel the globe and bring this world at least 2 hours of joy.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
Being 1 year older and still being a nutter….

What’s your favourite Woody van Eyden production or remix and why?
Hmm I hope that (there’s still one of that to come), but I guess the stuff I am working on right now (are) gonna be my favourites. From the past, (I) really enjoyed doing “Going Wrong” for Armin (van Buuren) (together with my B2B partner Alex M.O.R.P.H).

Guy Mearns’ remix of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” was sorta discovered by you! After you played it live, the track got a lot of attention! What do you think of the track?
I love DJs being creative with existing tracks and Guy did a great job. I (heard) somebody filmed me (while) I was playing this (hahahahahaha, 50000 viewers or so, simply mad). (Check out interview with Guy Mearns here.

If you could change one thing about trance, it would be …
Nothing.. hmmmmm maybe this (pigeonholed) thinking. I don’t classify (genres) into names. Ii like good (electronic) music, (whether) it’s trance, electro, techno, when it’s good, I’ll play it!

One of the strongest contenders for this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 poll is Australia’s tyDi. At a young age, he has developed a reputation for being both a fantastic live performer and producer. He has performed at the world’s biggest dance festivals over the past year and finally released his album Look Closer after 3 years. His remixes for Nadia Ali, Markus Schulz and Rank 1 are notable favourites, and although we here at Radio KUL have always been big fans of “Is It Cold,” “Somehow,” and “You Walk Away,” it was his earlier release “Fool” that caught our initial attention. Despite his impossible schedule, we catch Australia’s #1 DJ, Tyson Illingworth aka tyDi for a quick salvo of questions.

How did the mix for Ministry of Sound come about? What inspired you to pick the tracks?
I was very lucky to be asked by Ministry of Sound to mix my own CD for them, they approached me last year and said they would love me to do a mix. The tracks were a mixture of new tunes and also the older ones from the last 12 months that I have played at my big shows like Sensation and Trance Energy.

We love “You Walk Away” so much! What was it like working with Audrey Gallagher?
Working with Audrey is fantastic! She is a brilliant vocalist with a very unique voice and I knew she would sound great in my style of music. We are working on a few new projects now.

When will your debut album, Look Closer be released? Has anyone heard it yet and what has the initial response been?
Look Closer was released a few months ago, the album is doing extremely well. In Australia it debuted at #2 in the independent dance charts so I am very happy with its success. I could not have imagined a better response!

What’s your favourite track on the album and why?
My favorite song is probably the title track ‘Look Closer’, it is so different to all my other songs and it really holds a lot of emotion for me. I am very happy with the way that the track displays the concept of ‘tension and release’… the ‘verse’ sections hold tension and then it is released nicely in the chorus parts. This song took me 4 hours to write!

What do you think will surprise listeners when they listen to Look Closer?
The big surprise of my album is that it is nothing like my club sets, it is an insight into my production and it follows no rules. My album is very different to what I think my fans expected.

The DJ Mag Top 100 polls is a good time to reflect on the year has been. How has the last fiscal been for you and what accomplishments will you remember this last 1 year?
The last year has been the best year of my life, I have so many amazing experiences to remember. From playing massive shows in Amsterdam, Malaysia and Australia and also releasing my biggest productions yet – this year has been fantastic!

Tell us about the trance scene Down Under. Have you become an Australian icon for dance music and how do you carry this flag on your tours around the world?
The Australian dance scene is very big. I am lucky enough to be playing around the country every weekend at clubs and festivals and I am very proud to be from here. I think that Australians are always ready to party and to generally have a good time, I hope that when I play internationally I am able to show the rest of the world just how happy and relaxed we are – life is great!

Describe the tyDi sound in 3 words if you can!
Fun. Emotional. Epic.

Great remix for Nadia Ali’s “Fine Print.” How do you decide what to do with a track when you get asked to remix it?
The first thing that I think about is if I actually believe I can bring something new to the song and if it is a song that inspires me to remix it. There is no use remixing a song unless you can improve on it or take it into a new direction that shows a hybrid of the original and your own artistic ideas / style. My remix of ‘Fine Print’ was influenced a lot by my original production ‘You Walk Away’…. I used similar ideas that seemed to mould in very well with the Fine Print original. Nadia’s voice is amazing and was very fun to play around with.

Which DJ or producer do you really feel inspired by at the moment?
I have always been a big fan of BT!

What do you do when you’re not making music?
Swimming, beach, parties, movies, friends, red wine and anything exciting!

If you could attribute your success to one particular person, who would it be?
I could not pin it down to one person except God.

We have to ask whether there’s a special person in your life right now?
There are many special people in my life, without them I would be nothing.

What would you do if you could travel in time?
